There are two points that need to be made. Firstly, Cannabinoids have not been approved by Health Canada using the standard drug approval process. Are we therefore making recommendations for "off-label" use for an agent that has "no label"? Secondly, drugs that have not been proven safe for use in pregnancy are usually identified as such. Where in this guideline is the warning to this effect? As physicians, we are being used as pawns in a political game to legitimize (legalize) the use of compounds that have significant public health hazards without these compounds having to be approved using the scientific standards and procedures in place to protect patients and physicians. As physicians, we and our professional organizations, have a collective fiduciary responsibility to hold the government to scientific account on behalf of ourselves (the prescribers) and the Canadian public.
