2007, Journal of VoiceCitation Excerpt :It has been postulated that the mode of action of glucocorticoids in suppressing inflammation in asthmatic patients is such that a cytoplasmic steroid receptor translocates to the cell nucleus. This either induces increased synthesis of lipocortin-1, an inhibitor of phospholipase A2, and the arachidonic pathway of inflammatory mediator production, or it reduces transcription of cytokines, such as interleukins-3 and 5, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor.3–5 The vasoconstrictor activity of corticosteroids seems to reduce bronchial mucosal edema and thickening and enhances beta-adrenergic responsiveness.
