What it is
RxFiles has just published the sixth edition of the Drug Comparison Chart Book, a unique tool to assist in making the best possible drug-therapy decisions. The list of drug tables supplements an academic detailing service that provides physicians with objective comparative drug information. The sixth edition is 100 pages long and addresses more than 55 drug-therapy areas (eg, hypertension, lipids, acne, diabetes, weight loss, pain, gastrointestinal problems, migraine, contraception, herbal concerns, depression, insomnia, asthma, cannabinoids). RxFiles does not receive industry funding and operates with an arm’s-length grant from Saskatchewan Health. The effort to continually develop and update the charts is supported, in part, through book sales.
Putting the book together
RxFiles charts begin with input from family physicians, specialists, and pharmacists on information needs and practice gaps. An extensive review of the literature by RxFiles pharmacists provides the foundation for incorporating evidence and information relevant to prescribing decisions. The review looks to systematic reviews (eg, Cochrane), original landmark trials, clinical practice guidelines, and many other information sources. Important clinical outcomes (eg, heart events and death), risk-benefit assessments, patient safety, and cost considerations are emphasized. This information is then summarized, often on 1 page, and the differences, advantages, disadvantages, and prescribing pearls are highlighted. Input from family physicians and specialists is obtained for both chart development and updating.
How to access the book
The book comes in both standard and pocket editions. Order forms are available online at www.RxFiles.ca. Books can also be purchased at select university bookstores or from the Canadian Medical Association’s on-line store at www.cma.ca. The cover price is $49 and bulk pricing is available to organizations or groups on orders of 25 or more.
