Suitability criteria |
Patients with nonpsychotic, nonbipolar major depression with postpartum onset. Those less likely to be helped by a time-limited, structured treatment, such as IPT, include patients with a history of severe and complex trauma and those with profound disturbances in personality functioning. |
Goals of treatment
|
Refer for psychiatric consultation or consider hospitalization when patients
-
endorse suicidal thoughts or homicidal thoughts; -
have moderate-to-severe symptoms and do not respond to IPT alone; -
have a history of severe depression in the past or have had other reproductive-related depressive disorders, such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder or previous PPD; -
need more support and monitoring than you can provide; or -
have psychotic, manic, or substance-abuse symptoms.
