Very good read. I am new to Canada as a physician, having completed my Residency in Detroit, Michigan. It was a dedicated Teaching Program, with an emphasis on academia...and the one inexcusable mistake was to not take accurate VITALS with every visit. I can imagine because physicians are busy in private practice and some visits may not neccessarily warrant a physical exam, I think that at least the VITALS are mandatory and essential for every visit. This would cut down the need for "BP" visits to the office, opportunistically screen every patients that walks through the door, is relatively easy to do and is not cost intensive. I think instead of developing guidelines for BP screening, we should return to the basics on this issue and check a BP in everyone, and treat aggressively and appropriately.

I am family doctor working in Thompson, Manitoba.

I have noticed a high number of younger age population being diagnosed with high BP, but the problem is trying to get the younger age group to be compliant with their medication and treatment regime. This makes it difficult to manage in some cases.

I am a family physician in the UK.

I feel many people with high BP go undiagnosed. Patient education is needed which in turn will help improve number of people diagnosed.

These days super market medicine is taking over but regular follow up of BP control and drug side effect is very important as we see the downside of management when people are not followed up regularly.

This is a topic that in my 46 years of practice has been full of great potential for remarkable prevention. This is a topic that in my 46 years of practice has been full of great potential for remarkable prevention. There are many adults who belong to several organizations, all of whom take their blood pressure and nothing ever gets done that we know of. Lets take a "corporate man" who gets his done at work, belongs to army reserve, gets insurance medicals, checks his BP at Wal-Mart, but goes mainly to walk-in clinics due to busy schedule and has a "Family Doctor".

It has been my experience that each warns him of impending doom but no-one treats his problem. Oh for the days when we collected these readings and reacted. I believe the recommendations are right on ,but I wonder if we really see society as it truly unwinds. I really believe someday we are going to find a computerized way to have people collect readings on a card and someone will have workable data.
