I agree with Dr's Mahood, Liskowich, and Clark (Letters, October CFP) that abortion needs to be addressed in residency training, particularly counselling around the issue. I find myself in regular discussions with unhappy patients who feel "they have no choice", and we have a long discussion of the range of choices and supports available for a variety of different possibilities that they may or may not have considered, in addition to the one thing they are considering.
However, I do not agree that medical abortion exposure should be a core competency. This is a matter touching on the ethics of life and death, and there are those who will not be able to participate in this for personal, ethical, or religious reasons. Conscience must be respected, or we will all be the worse off.
