We read with great interest the Dangerous idea proposals presented at the Family Medicine Forum and published in the February 2018 CFP. We agree that blind medical school applications of all applicants proposed by Dr. Kapur is an ‘amazing idea’ and indeed the Admissions Office at the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland has been doing just that for undergraduate medical admissions since 2008. We anonymize applicant data by redacting all identifying information and using a number identification throughout the selection process, not just to interview selection, but to acceptance. Even for interviews, the interviewers only get first name and last initial and this is redacted from the interview reports before going to the Admissions Committee. We feel this eliminates any potential, and sometimes unconscious, bias of knowing the applicant’s name and leads to greater diversity of our accepted students. It would be wonderful if all medical schools did the same for both undergraduate admissions and for the postgraduate residency match.
