Some individuals who engage in self-harm later choose to obscure or commemorate their scars with tattoos. Scars, both physical and mental, are a theme that emerges in this issue of Canadian Family Physician, which highlights some challenging and important health concerns and determinants of health that often go overlooked, including loneliness (page 166), nonsuicidal self-harm (page 192), and the long-term health effects of adverse events of childhood, and explores trauma-informed (pages 170 and 204) and narrative-based (page 176) approaches to care.
