About the Cover

Cover Image

The cover image was created by visual artist Paula O’Brien, whose husband, Dennis, was the first on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast to receive a medically assisted death at home. Paula considers having created a wonderful final year of life for her husband and partner of 39 years to be her greatest accomplishment. She chronicled their year together through her art and photography and shared their story on her blog (paulaobrien.com). As medical assistance in dying (MAID) is newly legal, little is known about those requesting assisted deaths in Canada. This issue includes research on early experiences with MAID in British Columbia, including the reasons patients request MAID (page 674), and shares the perspectives and stories of providers (pages 639, e394, e400), caregivers (page e387), and patients (pages 667, e380, e414).
