This month’s cover image, French Countryside, was painted by Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin. Diabetes is among the most common conditions encountered in primary care, and management can present considerable challenges. Care can be complicated by patients’ circumstances, and distilling guideline recommendations down to identify which are most helpful to integrate into practice can be daunting. In this issue of Canadian Family Physician, we publish a concise summary of key recommendations identified as most relevant to primary care from the 2018 Diabetes Canada clinical practice guidelines (page 14). Also included are practical tips to integrate some of these approaches into the electronic medical record (page 43), as well as an equity care framework to help address social barriers faced by Indigenous patients with type 2 diabetes (page 25).

Le diabète figure parmi les problèmes de santé les plus courants observés en soins primaires et sa prise en charge pose des défis considérables. Les circonstances propres aux patients viennent compliquer les soins, et la recherche des recommandations des lignes directrices les plus utiles à incorporer dans la pratique représente une tâche interminable. Dans le présent numéro du Médecin de famille canadien, nous publions un résumé concis des principales recommandations jugées les plus pertinentes aux soins primaires parmi les lignes directrices de pratique clinique 2018 de Diabète Canada (page e8). Des conseils pratiques sont également proposés pour intégrer certaines des approches recommandées dans le dossier médical électronique (page 43), de même qu’un cadre de soins fondé sur l’éducation pour l’équité visant à atténuer les obstacles sociaux que doivent surmonter les patients autochtones vivant avec le diabète de type 2 (page e19).
