As a high-school teacher, I have learned, sometimes the hard way, that not every home is the same. For some people, mother and father are words that mean unhappy things.
Fostering kindness
We are in the hospital
She is the student
I am the teacher-on-duty
I’m no doctor
(though there is one among us)
But I’m guessing the ankle is broken, maybe badly sprained
Difficulty bearing the weight
Has your Mum or Dad been called?
The student gives a glance at the ground
A quick shake of the head
