Woman & Snow Bird II—from Dorset Fine Arts (www.dorsetfinearts.com)—on this month’s cover is by Indigenous artist Pitaloosie Saila, whose drawings are based on her memories of “how Inuit used to live.” Born in 1942 on the southwest coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut, Saila spent most of her childhood years being treated for tuberculosis in various Ontario and Quebec hospitals, where she also learned English. Relearning her native language when she returned to Baffin Island in 1957 was difficult. Today she is one of the few among her generation to fluently speak both English and Inuktitut. This month’s issue includes research articles on aspects of Indigenous health: partnering with Elders in primary care to improve mental health (page 274) and the provision of palliative care to Indigenous patients in the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut (page e163).
