Cover Image

This month’s cover image is by Vancouver-based artist Ken Foster. For 2 decades Ken has lived in the Downtown Eastside selling his paintings to survive and to support his daily drug habit. His signature subject is the Vancouver alleyway, and this month’s cover image is one example of hundreds of such paintings he has done on all manner of scrounged material. Ken’s art and story are captured in Ken Foster’s Vancouver, a book authored by Sean Nosek, which offers a sympathetic portrait of Ken’s extraordinary life and how he uses art to survive. Living with and managing addiction are challenging. Family physicians are often tasked with supporting patients struggling with substance use, including opioid use disorder (OUD). This issue offers resources to help physicians care for patients with OUD, including clinical practice guidelines aimed at primary care management of such patients (page 321), as well as research supporting the effectiveness of OUD treatment in primary care settings (pages 343 and e194).
