Cover Image

This month's cover image, entitled Conduction, was created by Andrew Roberts, a third-year medical student in the University of British Columbia's Island Medical Program. Copper played a pivotal role in communication when the telegraph was introduced in the 1830s, and to this day copper allows humans to connect over distances never thought possible. Similarly, the heart maintains communication between the atria and ventricles by conducting a tiny electrical signal that will fire more than 3 billion times in one's life. To capture this idea, Roberts used recycled copper wires to form the vessels and carved the heart from maple. Despite the heart's miracle of conduction, things can go wrong, requiring treatment of conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Anticoagulant medication is commonly prescribed in primary care, and this issue includes research on the quality of warfarin management in the primary care setting (page 416).
