Cover Image

The art for the cover of this special issue was created by Judith Scott (1943-2005). It depicts the bond between twins. At age 7 years, Scott, who lived with Down syndrome, was taken to live in various institutions in Ohio and was separated from her beloved twin sister Joyce. They reunited as adults. Judith was reclusive and uncommunicative. When Joyce invited her sister to live with her family in California in 1986 at age 43 years, Judith discovered her talent and love for fibre art. She created more than 200 pieces, many of them bought by galleries in places like San Francisco, Calif, London, UK, and New York, NY. Over time, Judith gained confidence, and this was reflected in her experimenting with techniques and fabrics. Joyce described this latelife phase as Judith finding herself and communicating through art. Judith died at age 62 years in Joyce’s arms.
