Helen McNicoll was one of the first women to achieve success as a professional artist in Canada. Her paintings broke down the rigid boundaries between the public and private spheres and presented a version of femininity that defied stereotypes. This month’s cover, The Brown Hat, is a melancholy portrait that is unusual for the artist in the direct gaze of its sitter and the dark palette. A deaf artist, McNicoll was exceptionally well integrated into hearing society: she read lips, played piano, traveled extensively, and attended professional association meetings. A clinical review in this month’s issue speaks to the profound effect hearing loss can have on patients, and provides an approach to diagnosing, managing, and supporting patients with various types of hearing loss (page 803).

Artist

Helen Galloway McNicoll, Canadian, 1879-1915, The Brown Hat, c 1906, oil on canvas, framed: 75.5 x 65.5 cm (29 3/4 x 25 13/16 in), Art Gallery of Ontario; gift from the estate of R. Fraser Elliott, 2006; 2006/88; ©Art Gallery of Ontario.
