In the sculpture on this month’s cover, A Glimmer of Hope, Otto Kamensek explores and processes his experiences of living with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. He melds his health experiences into his art to create a meaningful expression of what it is like to live with chronic disease. Patients are more likely to prioritize chronic conditions that affect their quality of life or that are symptomatic, such as arthritis, than their family physicians are (page 161). It is possible that a perceived lack of effective treatments for some chronic conditions might lead family physicians to downplay their importance as health concerns for patients. To support family physicians in caring for patients with one common and challenging chronic condition, osteoarthritis, this issue presents a simplified decision aid for treatment options in primary care (page 191).
