I am pleased to read that there are plans to increase the family doctor residency program to 3 years. I don't see why the 3 year residency program has to drag to 2030 for the first graduates.
I am retired since 2017 after 49 years of family practice and anaesthesia.
These have been good years. Initially, our group was five doctors and when retirement happened, we were eleven. The family doctor is pulled between "work-life balance". The profession of family practice is more of a "vocation". Hopefully that first character assessment has to be at the resident's admission day.
I cringe when I read about the "life-style" discussions. My take on this: If you are looking for the proverbial "life-style", don't go into family practice. Do something else.
Accept that you will miss weddings, social evenings, funerals and so on.Best regards,
