We are excited to launch Residents’ Corner—a news- and publication-sharing blog dedicated to issues pertaining to family medicine (FM), led and written by FM residents, for FM residents. Submissions are meant to fuel conversations about FM training and practice and on other key issues that are relevant to Canadian health care. There is considerable content freedom for residents to develop their own conversations.
Residents’ Corner was conceptualized in 2021 by Dr Adam Neufeld (University of Calgary in Alberta) and Section of Residents (SoR) colleagues within the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). The SoR represents and advocates for all FM residents in Canada, with a focus on optimizing training and curricula, learning and professional development, and resident well-being.
Calls for articles and published works will be advertised through the CFPC’s Info Digest, Twitter account (@CFPC_e), and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CFPC.CMFC), and through various SoR channels. Submissions are welcome in English and French.
Mission
The mission of Residents’ Corner is to facilitate connectedness and give residents a voice and platform to share their ideas on a national scale through the SoR. Our aim is to promote equity and inclusivity and to encourage sharing of the diverse perspectives of FM residents in Canada. Issues raised are intended to be relevant specifically to FM residents.
Types of articles
Residents are invited to submit these types of articles:
commentaries and opinion pieces (<750 words),
manuscripts (<1000 words, maximum 10 references, no tables or figures),
Live, Learn, and Share storytelling entries (<1500 words), and
artistic expression (eg, poems) that reflects current issues in FM training in Canada.
Submission process
All FM residents in Canada are welcome to submit their work or ideas for consideration. To do so, please send submissions to the CFPC SoR team at education{at}cfpc.ca.
Residents are encouraged to collaborate on pieces (ie, between educational institutions and streams), but this is not necessary. The work will first be reviewed by the SoR and CFPC leadership. The SoR will then vet the work and residents will be advised to submit their work through the Canadian Family Physician (CFP) Manuscript Central platform (instructions on how to do so will be provided upon approval). The work will then be published as a blog (https://www.cfp.ca/blog). Blogs will be published on an ongoing basis on the CFP website. If submissions are considered particularly timely and broadly applicable, they may be selected and edited by CFP staff for publication in the journal’s quarterly Residents’ Corner column.
Values and possible topics
Values that could be explored include resident autonomy and well-being, professional development, inclusivity and diversity, connectivity and collaboration, and storytelling as a way of living, learning, and sharing knowledge with others. Possible topics may pertain to practical issues facing Canadian FM residents (or their patients) today, with examples including, but not limited to, the following:
anti-racism,
planetary health,
the virtual medical climate,
challenges of or threats to FM as a career,
strengths and areas for growth in FM training,
international medical graduate experiences and lessons,
off-service experiences and reflections,
the state of wellness in medical education,
rural and remote medicine,
reflections on and experiences with electives, and
financial matters.
We look forward to hearing from you and collaborating with you to build a better tomorrow in FM.
