Shortly after the announcement of the CACs, I wrote the College in April 2015, asking them to consider other areas of medicine for the CAC recognition in addition to the 5 that had been introduced. I asked the College to consider the field of dermatology as one where a CAC should be considered because this was a particularly relevant area, where patients were encountering significant difficulties in accessing specialists and numerous GPs were obtaining extra training in this field to help their patients and communities. I was given this reply, 7 years ago: "There has been an extensive consultation and planning process around identifying these first 5 CAC domains of care. The College is taking addition of new CACs in a step-wise approach and is actively looking at other domains of care for CACs. Members will be updated with progress as dialogue continues."
I did not hear anything further, so I wrote them again, 18 months later in October 2016. This time I got a reply back from Dr. Wyman. He said that the College was still working on this and there would be more information by the middle of 2017. A few more years went by...so I wrote to Dr. Wyman again in August of 2020 to ask about recognizing added competence in dermatology. Thank you for the update. Always great to know progressive initiatives as we move forwards.
Your last paragraph state " We also aim to support those with interest in enhancing their competence in specific areas to better meet community needs.". I hope you will consider including Chronic disease management ( DM,CAD, CHF and COPD) per Health Quality Council Guidelines as part of an incentive for family physicians to perform these services with CAC or similar.
