Thinking Differently about Differences. This article is thought provoking, facilitating a critical look at the biomedical and social model while providing an alternative with critical thought. My favorite line is "shift from fix it, fight it to embrace it! "The 20 minute podcast with the author adds new information. One of the take home messages for me from Doctor and Parent is how our children are our best teachers. They motivate us to listen and work passionately to make sense of the world.

Dear Dr Klassen,
Thank you very much for sharing your experience, perception and impressions in regards to being a parent of children who might not fit the 'norm' and how to re-think about 'norm'. There is no doubt that having your own children provides lived experience of many issues that parents face, and the challenges that arise when interacting with health or education professionals about children who are neuro-diverse, and not neuro-typical.
Personally I found that the most impactful approach to such a situation is to use a problem-formulation, which captures strengths, abilities and challenges rather than a diagnostic formulation. Unfortunately at times a label (diagnosis) is required to access certain services or funding, nonetheless, the education and health professionals involved in the care can utilize a combination of perspectives as described in your article, with the main focus being on assisting and helping the parent / child to develop and thrive within their realm of abilities, interests and possibilities. Thank you again for a thought-provoking article!
