Cover Image

This month’s cover image was created by Michael Fong, one of Canadian Family Physician’s graphic designers. A portrait of Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet—the 19th century Belgian mathematician and statistician whose metric of body weight divided by the square of a person’s height would later become popularized as body mass index—is surrounded by a cloud of calculations on an old-fashioned slate. The value of body mass index as a marker of metabolic health is now a topic of hot debate, as Dr Sarah Fraser explains in our editorial (page 399), yet patients labeled as obese based on this metric face stigma in health care. As well, this issue provides an update on binge eating disorder (page 416), a condition that also causes patients to experience stigma and shame, with a focus on screening for and diagnosing this underrecognized condition in primary care.
