Family medicine education has a tendency to focus on diagnosing diseases rather than understanding symptoms. The latter is one of the most difficult and interesting parts of the profession, according to Dr Nicholas Pimlott in his editorial (page 305). The importance of treating symptoms themselves, including those not connected to a definitive diagnosis, is highlighted in a research article on the natural history of abdominal pain in family practice (page 341), which is the inspiration for this month’s cover image.
