How are family doctors unique and what makes them essential to a high-functioning primary health care system in Canada? In the editorial (page 526), Dr Nicholas Pimlott posits it is the ability to form symbiotic relationships with patients and put together critical pieces of information to solve complex medical problems. One commentary (page 530) suggests it is the ability of family doctors to apply discretionary judgment to idiomatic situations that makes them indispensable. A poem (page 580) highlights the deep empathy family doctors have for patients.
