This virus, the varicella-zoster virus, causes chickenpox, which can be teratogenic. Is this also true for HZ? Answer Herpes zoster, unlike chickenpox, is not associated with increased fetal risk. In contrast, a nonimmune woman exposed to HZ by contact might contract chickenpox.
