The radiological features of phylloides tumour of the breast with clinico-pathological correlation

The mammograms of 13 patients with phylloides tumour of the breast are reviewed and the results correlated with clinical and histological features. Three patients had recurrent tumours. There is a strong association between phylloides tumour and fibroadenoma. Many of the tumours are radiologically indistinguishable from fibroadenomata and it is not possible to predict tumour behaviour on the basis of clinical and radiological features alone.

The following signs may point towards a diagnosis of PT but can also be present in remodeled FAs: an indistinct, non-circumscribed margin, internal heterogeneity, internal cystic changes (corresponding to gelatinous, cystic or necrotic areas or to epithelial fissures highly suggestive of phyllodes tumors) (Fig. 10c). Internal calcifications and posterior attenuation are rare [13–17]. Like other sarcomas, malignant PT rarely metastasizes to the lymph nodes.
