Abstract

Patients with coronary heart disease have increased nocturnal urinary noradrenaline. Because melatonin suppresses sympathetic activity, we measured serum melatonin concentrations at night (0200h) in 15 patients with coronary heart disease. Melatonin was significantly lower in the patients than in 10 healthy controls (median 7·8 [interquartile range 6·5–11·8] vs 36·2 [32·2–42·5] pg/mL p<0·0001). Thus, impaired nocturnal secretion of melatonin in associated with coronary heart disease.

By contrast, the AMT2 subfamily comprises membrane proteins whose amino acid sequence is similar to that of yeast MEP transporters (Liu and von Wiren, 2017). Studies have shown that melatonin and dopamine are essential for nervous system regulation and boosting immunity (Brugger et al., 1995; Wang et al., 2018a). These substances are present in most plant tissues, where they play pivotal roles in the plant life cycle, regulating the processes of biosynthesis and catabolism by impacting the expression of enzymes, receptors, and transcription factors in phytohormones including auxin, cytokinins, and gibberellins (Liang et al., 2018a; Arnao et al., 2019; Liu et al., 2020a).
