The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, 5th Edition recognizes the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria as “children who experience an alteration in both their expressed gender and their biologically assigned gender, causing psychological distress or impaired daily function within the home and/or school setting for greater than six months.”6,15,16 Each child with gender dysphoria will have significantly variable needs depending on the degree of incongruence as well as the amount of support the child has in place.
